To use a Hue light, you need to first connect to a Hue bridge. You may have been prompted to pair when you started the app.

Pairing with an Unpaired Bridge

Tap the Hue disclosure triangle.

Tap the bridge you wish to pair with in the unpaired bridges list.

Press the button on the bridge within 30 seconds.
